Book Products

Project MUSE offers access to thousands of books from more than 100 distinguished scholarly publishers in a wide range of subjects within the humanities and social sciences. MUSE offers several purchase and subscription options to accommodate the different research needs and budgets at academic institutions. Participating publishers select the titles they offer on the MUSE platform on an annual basis, and decide through which product models they will make their books available on MUSE.

Book Collections

Book Collections are available for purchase in a variety of options, including collections by subject or by area studies, as complete collections of all titles released on MUSE from a single publication year, archival collections of backlist titles, and supplemental collections of titles added to the MUSE platform after their initial publication year. Purchase of a MUSE Book Collection conveys perpetual access rights and interlibrary loan permission for the included books. Two subscription options, with access but not perpetual ownership or ILL rights, are also available. Individual Books

Many books in the MUSE Book Collections are also available for individual purchase, and MUSE publishers make available for single title purchase a number of books that are not included in any of the collections. MUSE partners with third parties to facilitate the purchasing of individual book titles, which allows libraries to acquire electronic books on MUSE through familiar, established channels. Publishers opt-in to participate in the single title sales program, select the books that will be available, and set the prices for single title purchasing. Single title purchasing is currently available through GOBI Library Solutions from EBSCO [#link to https://gobi.ebsco.com/], with specific title availability information accessible through the GOBI platform. Libraries are encouraged to contact GOBI/EBSCO for more information on incorporating MUSE books in eApproval plans, receiving title notifications, and how to order individual titles.

Evidence-Based Acquisition

Evidence-Based Acquisition of Books on Project MUSE provides libraries with an option to open up discovery and access for significant numbers of high quality scholarly books, allowing faculty and students to find and make use of the most relevant content for their research and teaching. The user experience is as if the institution already owns the book, with unlimited simultaneous usage, downloading and printing of DRM-free PDF chapters. The library can track which books are receiving the most use through standardized usage reports, and select for permanent acquisition those titles best suited for its collections. The access available via an EBA program also allows library subject selectors to more thoroughly review book selections recommended by faculty or approval profiles before making purchase decisions.

EBA programs may be tailored to meet specific library monograph collection development needs and budgets, through limiting the access pool by subject, publication year, publisher, or price. Some libraries may wish to supplement their purchases of MUSE Book Collections in core subject areas with an EBA program to identify desirable books outside of the core collection scope. All books made available by the publisher for individual sale on the MUSE platform may also be included in an Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) program.
